Sipping through the Bluegrass State: A Guide to the Kentucky Wine Trail

When people picture Kentucky, chances are bluegrass music, horseracing, and bourbon top the list. But did you know there’s a whole other side to the state? With more wineries popping up each year, Kentucky is quickly becoming a go-to destination for wine trail lovers. Think rolling hills, horse farms, and the soft sound of banjos in the background as you sip on something delicate and local.

The state’s wine trail offers a relaxed, scenic, and delicious way to explore the area. Whether you’re a connoisseur, or just a casual sipper, let’s explore the wineries waiting to be discovered in the beautiful state of Kentucky.

The Wine Trail

Kentucky has over 70 wineries throughout the state, many of which connect to several wine regions. There are many to choose from, depending on what parts of the state you are looking to hit. Here’s a quick look at some of the popular wine regions:

Northern Kentucky Wine Region

River views, charming small towns, and a variety of wines can be found in Northern Kentucky. Whether you stop at Stonebrook Winery in Melbourne, or the historic Baker-Bird Winery in Augusta (among others), you are in for a treat. From dry reds to sweet fruit wines, the flavors are endless. It is the perfect place to experience a laid-back afternoon with a glass in hand.

Central Kentucky Wine Region

Known as the “heart” of the state’s wine scene, Central Kentucky presents award-winning wines for your tasting pleasures. Equus Run Vineyards in Midway and Talon Winery in Lexington are some great options to explore (with others nearby) within the central area. Whether you’re following the trail, or just passing through on your way to one of the several historic sites found in the area, you’re guaranteed to have a great time at these sipping destinations.

Western Kentucky Wine Region

Known for hospitality and rich fruit wines, the western region includes the state’s largest winery, Purple Toad, located in Paducah. Several other spots, such as the Poca Terra Winery in Benton, feature fruit wines, with specialization in blackberry, peach, and cherry wines. Many of the wineries are family-owned, offering a personal touch to each drink made. You’ll leave with both a bottle and a handful of memories when you stop in Western Kentucky.

Tips for Traveling the Kentucky Wine Trail

  • Plan Your Route: Some wineries are tucked away down country roads, where others are a part of a more clustered wine region. Use a trail map to navigate your path, as well as call ahead to ensure the wineries are open.
  • Don’t Rush: Take your time, and savor the flavors. Part of the experience is the slow pace. Take in the views, chat with the locals, and learn more about the history of the Kentucky Wine Trail.
  • Bring a Cooler: A Kentucky vacation isn’t legit without taking a few bottles home, and with the Kentucky sun being unforgiving, you’ll want to bring a cooler for the bottles.
  • Know the Grapes: Research the native grapes found growing in Kentucky’s soil to better understand the flavors and learn about the wine-making process from start to finish.
